You Cannot Govern Without Trust

The problem with the Federal government can be summed up in six words: we no longer trust our government. There are many reasons for this. First, the government lies to us. It does this by telling us vague information couched in calculated information designed to hide the truth. It speaks to us this way to insure that they are never caught in a lie because they tell so many of them, but occasionally they still manage to get caught in the gears of their own devices. This is how Speaker Pelosi was caught when she lied about not being told about water boarding and the Central Intelligence Agency had the records to prove her a liar.

Lying to the American people is done for a couple of reasons. First, they believe that you will interfere with their governance of the nation and they want you to keep out of it. This point of view assumes that the electorate is a group of children with simple minds that ought to be kept out of adult business. That is one hundred and eighty degrees out of phase with the intent of our founders. Our founders believed that the authority to govern was derived from the consent of the governed. That such consent was loaned to government and that the elected representatives of the people would look out for their interests. This is why we educate our children at public expense, because they must one day decide for themselves what will secure or endanger their freedoms. If government lies to them and keeps them in the dark about what it is doing, then citizens cannot possibly make that decision and so their freedoms are imperiled by default.

This is the reason that the government’s accounting system is comprised of numerous books. It is why the Office of Management and Budget’s figures very so wildly depending on who is asking and the specifics of the questions asked. It is why answers differ from each party. If the financial waters are muddied, it is the politicians who keep it that way to keep you in the dark about their actions. There are many information filters in the capital to prevent you from knowing the full accounting of the government’s finances despite the fact that it is you that provides them that money.

The second reason that government lies to the people is to hide their own wrong doing and mistakes. When was the last time that you heard a politician accept full responsibility for his actions? Unless I am very much mistaken, politicians are comprised of human beings and we are prone to making mistakes. Yet, the politicians appear to be perfect. They have public relations people, marketing people, and party loyalists who insure that the public image of perfection is always maintained. This is why the jackals are elected to office repeatedly and the public cheers them as heroes of old, but it is only illusory. This is why when a direct question is asked of your Congressman or Senator you get a long, labyrinthine answer designed to confuse and not to enlighten. The spin people are there to insure that you never catch on to this fact and to insure that you never have time to pursue it if you do.

If lying were not enough, the Federal government also engages in active efforts to deceive the American people. Did the White House know that the subversion of the National Endowment for the Arts would greatly anger the American people? Of course it did. Why were they speaking of creating code words to hide their intentions from the American people at a meeting designed to create propaganda for the President? They knew that their actions were wrong and they did them anyway. The woman responsible was Valerie Jarrett, a slum lord and Marxist from Chicago, who most likely ordered the subversion as it was her assistant that was directing the project. But this is only one facet of a multi faceted problem.

The shenanigans of the Executive branch aside, the Legislative branch has also worked to deceive the American public about matters of public law and policy. That is why they submit bills that are thousands of pages long, written by someone outside of the government, and rushed through before anybody has any idea what is in them. That is why Speaker Pelosi, who promised the most open and honest government in history, said that if you want to know what is in the bill you have to pass the bill. That is insanity. By so doing, the will of the public is ignored because the representatives, who could not be bought to vote on such a package, had no idea what they were voting for and there was no way that the people’s interests could be protected.

Which brings me to my final point, if the people’s representatives can be purchased with the people’s own money in the light of day, what have we become as a nation? The purchase of a state’s vote by buying off Sen. Mary Landrieu, Sen. Ben Nelson, Sen. Kent Conrad, et al is a direct insult to the American people. If whoring your values is now part of what it means to be an American then count me out. Despite what President Clinton said, character does matter.

In point of fact, it is the lack of character as displayed by our own government that causes a thinking citizen to not trust it or its motives. It is the reason that we no longer trust politicians from either party. Democrats and Republicans have failed us as representatives, as men and women of integrity, and as human beings. It is a problem so pervasive that there is no remedy for it, but to discharge those who betrayed our trust. So soiled has the Federal government become that all incumbents are tainted. This is why Republicans have recently lost as well as Democrats as the virtue of both is in question.

How does the Federal government respond to the increasing anger of the people? They have responded with ridicule and by declaring themselves our enemy. For an elected official to openly declare themselves in direct opposition to the will of the American public is the most profound statement on the corruption of our government that can be made. It signals that the Federal government has moved from accepting the people’s sovereignty on loan to taking it by force. It means that we are dangerously close to no longer being free men and women, but slaves to a growing tyranny. So imbued with arrogance, Speaker Pelosi declared us the stooges of corporate influence. Her arrogance is mirrored by the President of the United States who openly derides us to the laughter of the Democratic faithful and the news media.

Laughter is the ultimate sign of disregard and contempt. It means that we are not worthy of the elites attention and that our concerns are only worthy of mirth. To place these events in context, if your employer expressed some concerns with your job performance, would you ridicule him or her for it? Would you declare that person to be a stooge of capitalist interests and continue to do whatever you wished to do? Of course not, but that is exactly what the Congress and President are doing to you and they sincerely believe that you will not act against them, but they are wrong.

The only weapon that we have left in the face of these despots is the vote. We, the people, will decide if they survive in office or go. Are we the same Americans that brought forth freedom and liberty on these shores or will we become willing slaves to tyranny? Will we allow these jackals to ridicule the very people who installed them in office or will we exact our wrath upon them and vote them out? What future we will eventually bequeath to our children will be decided in the next few years, but as for me I will not stand idly by and watch my children’s future be frittered away by an arrogant Federal government for the sake of some damnable collective that hides its intentions from the people that it would rule.

Live free or die.

William, I hate to say it, but I'm really starting to think that voting them out won't be enough. I'm afraid something more drastic may be necessary.

Karen- I understand what you mean, but I pray that such measures will not be needed. The last time Americans felt as you and I did 600,000 Americans lost their lives and the wounds of that conflict have only partially healed. Yet, the second amendment exists to safeguard our freedoms from a tyrannical government. I would suggest that the founding fathers intended for us to abide by the decisions of the electorate regardless of our agreement with that choice. Therefore, I would only advocate more drastic measures if the government began setting aside elections that they did not like.

In my view, that would be the critical breach of contract between the government and the people that would necessitate bringing force to bear against the usurpations of that government. By setting aside the results of an election, the government would be telling the people that they are no longer free and have no voice in their own affairs. I pray that that day never comes because victory is not assured to either party and such a contest promises to spill much blood regardless of the outcome.

I stand by my faith in my countrymen that such measures will not be necessary. We are still Americans and the sense that I get from the marches around the nation to protest Washington’s excesses and usurpations tell me that the government is in for a rude awakening in November. I daresay that the ’94 elections are, but a taste of what is to come. When mothers take to the street to protect the future of their children from an out of control government, the government had better beware. Washington is poised for a massive backlash and I am dying for Election Day to roll around. If I am right, those guys won’t know what hit them, but that is just one November and there are several more that will be on the way. When the public wrath is spent, I predict Washington will be a very different town.

let us-indeed- hope that we do not have to resort to another Civil War---
the state sovereignty issue is being tested via Arizona's stand--
-we could get into the Founders' take on an all powerful Federal government --just not now...

The way i see it, the only way out of this is limited government. We must elect representatives who will banish as many of the useless parasites in government as they can each time. We need to wean ourselves off government at every turn and in turn take the responsibility away from them. That way even if a dishonest slimeball is elected, it can't do much damage.
